Product Group Editing: Limitations, Troubleshooting and FAQ

Limitations

  • No undo. A group save changes the products at once. Make a backup before big changes (see Messages, Confirmations and Safety).
  • No transaction. Group products are saved one by one. If the save stops in the middle (PHP time limit, fatal error of another module), part of the products is changed and part is not. Repeat the same save after fixing the cause.
  • Big groups take time. Every product is loaded and saved completely. With the default full mode a group of several hundred products can take a noticeable time. Split very big groups by filters or increase the PHP time limit on your hosting.
  • Lists replace, rows add. Categories, filters, stores, downloads and related products replace the lists of the group products. Discounts, images, attributes and recurring profiles are added (or updated), never deleted. Only options can be deleted, with Delete this option from the products or Replace All Options.
  • SEO keywords are not copied. They must be unique.
  • Not in the new product form. The group checkboxes are shown only when you edit an existing product.
  • One group per login. The group belongs to the login session of the administrator.

Troubleshooting

I do not see the checkboxes in the product form.

  • The group is empty. Add products to the group in Catalog > Products first.
  • You opened the form of a new product (Add New). Group editing works in the edit form only.
  • The modifications are not refreshed. Open Extensions > Modifications and click Refresh, then clear the theme cache (see How to reset modification cache in Opencart 3).
  • The module is not installed on the Ka Extensions page or Ka Extensions is older than 4.1.1.30.

I do not see the group buttons above the product list.

Refresh the modifications and the theme cache. If your admin theme or another module replaces the product list template, the module cannot add its buttons there; contact us.

I saved the product, but the group products did not change.

  • No field was checked. Changes without checkboxes are saved only in the edited product.
  • The form had an error (for example, an empty name in one of the languages) and nothing was saved. Look for the red error messages in the form.
  • You saved a new product. The group is not changed from the new product form.
  • You logged in again, and the group of the new session is empty.

The option was not deleted from some products.

  • Replace All Options was checked: the delete checkboxes are ignored then.
  • The same option was checked for copying in another row: copying wins.
  • The products do not have this option (the success message counts only the products where the option was deleted).

The number in the delete confirmation is one more than the group size.

The edited product is not in the group. It takes part in the save anyway and loses the option too, so it is counted.

The values of an option in a group product changed after copying.

This is how copying works: an existing option gets the values of the edited product, and values that the edited product does not have are removed. To add only one value, add it to the products by hand or use a product that has all needed values as the source.

A field of another module was lost after a group save.

Switch Enable faster group editing off and repeat the test. See Compatibility with Other Modules.

An administrator gets a permission error.

Check the user group of the administrator in System > Users > User Groups. Saving products and group actions need Modify for catalog/product; the module pages need the Access and Modify permissions of the Ka Extensions entries. Installing the module gives these permissions only to the user group of the administrator who installed it.

A blank page or an error after saving.

Look at System > Maintenance > Error Logs, see How to see extended error information, and send us the error text.

FAQ

Do the group products have to be similar?

No. Any products can be in one group. Only the checked fields are copied, so different products can share a price, a category or a discount and keep everything else.

Can I copy data from a product that is not in the group?

Yes. Open any product, check the fields and save. All group products get the checked fields, and the edited product is saved as usual.

Can I change the price by a percentage?

No. The module copies values. All checked products get the same price.

Does the group survive a logout?

No. The group belongs to the login session. After a new login the group is empty.

Do two administrators share a group?

No. Every administrator (every login) has an own group.

Does a group save trigger other modules?

Yes. Every group product is saved with the standard editProduct() function, so its events and modifications run for every product.

Will the carts of customers break after copying options?

No for options and values that stay: their ids are kept. Values and options that are removed (by copying, replacing or deleting) are no longer available, like after removing them by hand.
